Course Description:
In this course you will explore the incidence and circumstances surrounding sexual abuse in Indigenous communities. You'll learn why victims are often reluctant to report abuse and access services, and why this presents a challenge to your investigations. You'll receive some guidance in terms of responding to victims non-judgmentally and empathically. In addition, the police and community response to missing persons are explored. Finally, community resources including Victim Service Units are described.

Learning Outcomes:

Respond to victims of sexual abuse and survivors of missing persons with compassion and empathy
Engage the principles of trauma-informed care with respect to Indigenous victims and others you encounter during investigations of sexual abuse
Apply your knowledge of the factors affecting Indigenous victims of sexual abuse and families of missing persons during your investigations
Enlist the support of Victim Service Units and other services as is appropriate for your investigation
