ClassGraphic Course Description:
This course describes and defines the impacts of trauma, abuse, intimate partner violence and the abuse of elderly people. It explains the vulnerability of Indigenous persons, linking it to the effects of intergenerational trauma and residential schools. To a significant degree, the modules in the course rely on the lived experience of Indigenous
community members and current members of local police forces.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Consider traditional family dynamics and gender roles in Indigenous culture and how they have evolved under colonization
  • Acknowledge the complex relationship between trauma and domestic violence in Indigenous communities
  • Recognize the common signs of abuse of elderly persons
  • Consider the impacts of colonization on the treatment of the elderly
  • Acknowledge and respect the healing strategies provided in response to the injustices inflicted on Indigenous women
